Brad Stevens reveals prototype target for the Celtics

The Boston Celtics have the best record in the NBA. They're top of the Eastern Conference and are also considered to have one of the most talented rosters in the NBA. Yet, the Celtics still have an open roster spot to fill. Boston is expected to make an addition with the Feb. 8 trade deadline fast approaching.

During a recent news conference following a team practice, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens discussed the type of player he is looking to add for the second half of the season.

According to The Athletic's Jay King, Stevens noted how Boston would be looking to add another 'big wing.' However, he was also quick to note the Celtics were limited in trade resources.

Finding a backup wing that can provide value on both sides of the floor has been Boston's ideal addition for two seasons. Boston added Osahe Brissett and Lamar Stevens during the summer, yet they're both known for their defensive upside and are seen as energy guys. Dalano Banton has the size to play on the wings but lacks the shooting stroke to be effective.

The Celtics have multiple draft assets they could use in a trade, along with a $6.2M trade exception via the Grant Williams sign-and-trade to the Dallas Mavericks in the summer. Finding someone who can impact both sides of the ball and is willing to come off the bench for such a low salary will be incredibly difficult. It's why Boston continues to search for the elusive "wing with size" that Stevens is talking about.

The most logical outcome is that the Celtics stand pat at the trade deadline. They can use their traded player exception to sign a player off waivers, so long as his salary fits within the value of the exception. Otherwise, they will likely convert one of their two-way players to fill the final spot.

Neemias Queta has performed well. However, Drew Peterson could also be a candidate to switch from a two-way contract, as Stevens may see him as a similar project to Sam Hauser, who has thrived since coming through Boston's development system as an undrafted rookie.

Whatever the Celtics decide to do, it's likely to be a fringe move. Their top-eight rotation is highly talented and performing at a consistently high level. Stevens is looking for depth, and that narrows the player pool. Either way, Boston will be a threat in the postseason and will continue to be viewed as championship favorites.
