NFL reveals critical part of the Jets' 2024 schedule
Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

It all ended last season for the Jets on the first Monday Night of the season, and that is exactly where things will pick back up for the Jets.

A year after watching Aaron Rodgers go down with an Achilles injury on Monday Night Football at MetLife stadium against the Buffalo Bills, the NFL is putting the Jets back on Monday Night to kickoff the 2024 season. This time they will at least be away from the turf monster at MetLife.

The New York Jets will face off against the San Francisco 49ers on the first Monday Night game of the 2024 season in a game that is filled with storylines.

Besides Rodgers’ return to football, he will also be going against a team he has a long history with. San Francisco famously passed on Rodgers in the 2005 NFL Draft, and he has often struggled to punish the franchise for that decision, the 49ers claiming postseason wins over Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in the 2012, 2013, 2019 and 2021 seasons. However, Rodgers has never had a defense like the one the 2024 Jets are boasting.

Speaking of defense, the 49ers will also face off for the first time against their former defensive coordinator, Jets head coach Robert Saleh. Saleh oversaw the 49ers' defense for the first four seasons of Kyle Shanahan's tenure as head coach, including in the 2019 campaign that saw the Niners suffer the first of their two Super Bowl defeats to the Chiefs.

This will be the first time Saleh gets a chance to face his former team since taking the Jets head coaching job before the 2020 season.

Saleh won’t be the only one wearing a Jets logo who will be facing off against their former team. Former 49ers’ first round picks Solomon Thomas and Javon Kinlaw, both now members of the stout Jets’ defense will get a chance to show the 49ers what they let go.

It will not be an easy matchup for either team. There is obviously a lot of history between the players and coaches, but it is also two teams that most experts expect to be in the Super Bowl hunt late in the season.

This is a fantastic matchup and one that has all the makings of a perfect cap off to opening week in the NFL. This will likely be one of the most watched games of the season and with good cause.

Is it September yet?
